Controlling Hazards: Are you clear where the buck stops?

What happens when accountability isn't clear?

Imagine this:

Your company has a large regional site, with several business units operating out of it. Staff from across all of the business units have become ill – and an investigation has discovered that a legionella outbreak is responsible. Leaders are furious their people have been put at risk and want to know how this happened and who was accountable for managing that risk.

If this was your site, would you know the answer? Would accountability be crystal clear?

And not just for legionella – for all the critical hazards that need to be controlled so they don’t seriously injure or kill people at your sites.

Does everyone know where the buck stops?

When accountability isn’t clear, hazards can get out of control.

On complex sites with different business units, leadership teams, HSE partners, facilities colleagues and contractor companies, it’s often not clear who is calling the shots; who is making the decisions that keep hazards in check so they don’t cause harm?

Without clear accountability, there’s a real danger that critical risk management decisions aren’t made, resources aren’t allocated, and improvement actions aren’t followed through.

One solution is to put a clear Accountability Framework in place. This is a simple framework that identifies an accountable person for the whole site, gives them a clear line of sight to issues on the ground, provides assurance and clarity that everything is in place to manage risks, and supports everyone on a site to work together to effectively control hazards.
