Babcock: Building confidence to pause or stop work when something feels unsafe
Each January, Babcock brings its people together to pause work and talk openly about safety. In 2026, the focus was on building confidence to pause or stop work when something feels unsafe.
The challenge
Stopping work isn’t always easy.
People can feel embarrassed, unsure or worried about how they will be perceived. In some environments, pausing a task can feel like admitting failure rather than preventing harm.
Babcock wanted to shift this mindset and create a culture where stopping work feels unsafe is seen as responsible, positive, and something to be proud of. This company-wide pause needed to spark honest conversations, build confidence and give leaders ways to support their teams.
The outcome
This company-wide event helped shift the focus from pausing or stopping work when something feels unsafe to being responsible and something to be proud of. Reinforcing Babcock’s commitment to everyone going home safe every day.
Our solution
We created a suite of materials for Babcock to use during a company-wide safety event. The materials enabled leaders to have effective conversations with their teams. It used real stories from colleagues who had paused or stopped work; it encouraged discussions about what prevents them from speaking up; and it challenged complacency through ‘what if?’ discussions.
We also created a leader self-reflection guide that helped leaders to reflect on everyday pressures, how they currently respond when their team pauses or stops work, and how they can improve their response by fostering psychological safety in their teams. Plasma screens and posters helped build visibility and consistency across sites.
