Delivering environmental targets
Anglo American: Making the environment matter
We worked with the global mining company, Anglo American, to encourage commitment from leaders and managers to play their part in delivering ambitious water, energy and climate change targets.
The challenge
Anglo American needed to deliver against ambitious water, energy and climate change targets.
We worked with them to help shift their people’s mindsets and encourage commitment from leaders and managers to play their part in delivering those targets.
‘Environmental issues present major challenges and opportunities for us as a business. By tackling them in a proactive, innovative, and collaborative way, we can minimise the risks and impacts and leave a long-lasting and positive environmental and social legacy.’
Our solution
We created a simple yet compelling narrative and business case to clearly articulate why environment matters to Anglo American. This would show how the company’s environmental activities are interlinked, explain the strategic choices that had been made, and help to identify the interdependences between key enablers such as policies, standards, and legal requirements, to ultimately improve the company’s environmental performance.
To engage the whole organisation in ‘Environment Matters’, we provided a toolkit to enable team conversations for management and environment teams to explore the main environment challenges and opportunities for the business.
The toolkit was supported by a compelling engagement campaign that set out the environmental strategy and prompted thought provoking reflection on why environment really does matter to Anglo American.
The outcome
The tools were rolled out across the business in multiple languages. Figures from the year following implementation showcased the significant impact the engagement programme had on Anglo American’s water, energy and greenhouse gas performance, with total savings of $180 million.
