The challenge

At Babcock, operating safely is their priority and inherent to their purpose: creating a safe and secure world together. Babcock needed their leaders to understand the critical role they play in creating the right safety culture across the business.

With operations in the UK, Australasia, Canada, France and South Africa, it was difficult to engage all leaders across the globe in an interactive and inclusive way.

Our solution

We created an interactive, global event called the Safety Summit. Every operational and functional leader was invited to a 2 ½ hour session, either in-person or online. During this session, leaders worked in groups and were guided through the experience by a digital learning guide on an iPad. Using the iPad, as well as resources in the room, leaders worked through 10 different zones, reviewing scenarios, talking through dilemmas, watching animations, completing tasks and making a personal commitment. Each zone focused on a different topic, applying 8 safety leadership behaviours to manage health, safety and environmental risks at Babcock.

At the end of the event, a global Q&A session was run with Babcock’s Executive Committee, giving leaders the opportunity to ask some key questions to the panel.

The outcome

The first Safety Summit took place in 2022, engaging over 1500 leaders. In 2023, the event doubled, engaging over 3000 leaders at 28 different locations around the world, plus 20 virtual sessions. 97% of attendees agreed that they knew what they needed to do to create the right safety culture at Babcock after attending the event. And 99% of these leaders were committed to doing what they can to create the right safety culture at Babcock.
