Improving health, safety and wellbeing
Anglo American: Understanding the dangers of noise and dust
We worked with the global mining company, Anglo American’s, Group Health team to help leaders and front-line managers understand the risks that dust and noise pose to both people and the organisation.
The challenge
Anglo American’s ambition to achieve ‘Zero Harm’ includes helping employees look after their own health and wellbeing. In an inherently noisy and dusty business, it’s essential to have clearly defined noise and dust standards that all employees understand and work to.
It was vital that managers at Anglo American understood the importance of assessing health risks, engineering out dust and noise wherever possible and ensuring front-line employees behaved in line with the standards.
Our solution
We created a range of practical communication and learning resources to help change attitudes and develop the right behaviours. The solution included interactive PDFs that highlighted the impact of dust and noise, toolbox talks for supervisors to help engage their teams in the risks, a microsite for leaders and managers and a suite of supporting communication materials.
Company-wide action plans
All Business Units completed self-assessments against the requirements of the Group standards for hearing conservation and respiratory protection. Group Health audited the results and action plans were put in place to address any gaps.
“I have found BB&A’s approach to be very creative, with a flair for translating complicated concepts into simple English, diagrams and pictures.”
